Inlays and Onlays

At Brixton Smiles we can provide inlays and onlays as part of our comprehensive range of dental restoration treatments.

What is an inlay?

Inlays are used in a similar way to fillings but can be used to help repair a tooth with a larger surface area. They are usually used on the teeth at the back of the mouth, which tend to be larger and are used for chewing. Much like a filling, an inlay is designed to fill in a cavity, at which point it is bonded to the tooth to help prevent any further damage.

What is an onlay?

Onlays perform a similar function to both inlays and fillings, but are used to help repair the damage done to the cusp of the tooth. The cusp is the part of the tooth that is raised and visible, and so an onlay sits on top of this raised part of the tooth, repairing and protecting the tooth from further damage.

What are inlays and onlays made of?

They can be made of a variety of different materials, the most common of which are a metal such as gold, ceramic/porcelain, or composite resin.

If you think you may be in need of an inlay or onlay or would like to discuss any dental restoration needs or queries you may have, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
